San Cristobal was the first island we visited among the 4 inhabited islands in the Galapagos. After a short hike up the hill called Cerro Tijeretas, you will have a really rewarding viewpoint of the ocean.
Thanks to the Moon tour book, we learned about the beach protected by a rocky outlet called Playa Punta Carola – a great place to go snorkeling on your own. Instead of spending $$$ on a tour, at Galapagos islands, you can actually see tons of wild animals just by snorkeling on your own. And the best part? It doesn’t cost you anything! It’s a good idea to bring your own snorkeling gear and you are good to go whenever, wherever. We swam with huge turtles and playful sea lions at Playa Punta Carola. There are not many people here so you get to spend quality time with the amazing sea animals all to yourself, for however long you wish. We had such an amazing time!
Galapagos is known for the abundance and variety of the species living on the island, the animals here are not afraid of people at all. They feel very comfortable in their natural habitat and probably enjoyed “people watching” the humans.
When commuting between islands. These ferries are the way to go. You don’t need to buy tickets online in advance, just show up in the many local tour companies and get your ferry tickets from them. The ferries run multiple times a day between islands, so make sure to ask the schedules and plan your travels accordingly.
Santa Cruz is the busiest island and the most commercial. There are tons of hotels, restaurants and tour companies on the island. Santa Cruz’s main port is a favorite chill spot for the sea lions, teaching their fellow humans how to nap like a champ on the bench.
At night time, you can also see lots of white tip sharks and sometimes stingrays swimming in the shallow water near the port. At Galapagos islands, you don’t need to make much effort to spot the wild animals, they are literally everywhere!

It was a great honor and surprise that my Galapagos photo got featured on the newest edition of the Moon Galapagos tour book. This book helped us tremendously in planning our trip to the Galapagos islands – Offering many great tips on how to navigate the islands the do-it-your-own island hopping style (since we didn’t go with a multi-day cruise tour).
Cellar connections and wifi can be spotty on the Galapagos islands due to its remoteness. So it’s not always easy to rely on our phones to look up information. The tour book came in extremely handy and we would highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos!
The rumors are true. The Galapagos islands is a trip of a lifetime.
